London City Airport (LCY) is London's most central airport, serving as a critical transport hub for over 30 destinations across the UK and Europe. Their aim is to help make London better as they develop their operations through ambitious, forward thinking projects. LCY is just a short hop from Canary Wharf, while the City of London can be reached in as little as 20 minutes on the DLR directly from the airport’s own station. In 2024 they welcomed over 3.4 million passengers, many of whom were attracted by their convenient location and uniquely rapid transit through the airport – reaching their gate in under 20 minutes and getting out of the airport in as little as five minutes. In September 2024 the Government approved London City Airport’s plans to increase its annual passenger cap from 6.5 million to 9 million passengers and to fly three extra flights in the first half hour of operations during the week. It also received an Excellence accreditation as one of the Mayor of London’s Good Work Standards employers.
We were instructed by the Chief Executive and Chief People Officer to appoint a Director of Communications to lead the strategy during a critically important period of the airports development. A key focus of the role was to raise the profile of the airport, both in the UK and internationally in a proactive, creative and innovative way. We conducted an extensive search process, considering candidates from within the aviation sector, but also from other high volume, customer facing environments, such as hospitality, attractions, retail and the broad transport sector. The successful candidate was Michael Kissman who has an exceptional comms background from leading retailers such as Boots, Tesco and Marks & Spencer, as well as aviation experience as the Head of Communications at London Gatwick.
